Gym Induction
« on: Mar 09, 2010, 20:01:53 »
I went to the local council gym that is located at the local swimming pool. They seem to have 2 treadmills, 2 Cross trainers, an upright bike, prone bike, rowing machine and some weight training stuff.

The induction comprised of vague pointing at the equipment a brief overview of what they are and that was it really. I think I would need to choose my times carefully and work out a program to get any use what so ever so thinking the search continues as I quite like the idea now of getting fitter and taking off the gains from giving up.

Next stop North Gailes.

I've been a member of a gym for a few months and have watched 100's of inductions.
It really depends on who you are and how 'fit' you look.
My induction consisted of being shown how the built in TV's worked then was told to read the instruction. No demo's no charts no nothing.
Cue a good looking female, her induction with last up to an hour and a half, being shown every minute detail and being demo'd every machine.

You saying I've lost my looks.  :p

It was more the fact we couldn't get near the machines to see how they worked that disapointed me more. I have my induction card so I can still go and pay £3.70 for a session if I feel like but I need a bit of assistance to make up a program I can use.

I got my induction & 8 weeks free through healthy lifestyle thing at work.

They took my height, weight etc. & also measured heart rate & lung capacity before I even got near a machince then asked what I was looking to achieve from going to the gym. They then done a heart rate test on on of treadmills to see how I got on. Then it was setting up a program & talking through all the machines.

I'd be tempted to speak to someone else in the place & see if they could do a proper induction for you at least setting up a program to get you started.

You may laugh but if it hadn't been for the TV's I've have given up months ago, seriously.
I get to the gym at 5.05 on the way from work, get changed, couple of stretches then it's Deal or No Deal on C4+1 for a 30 minute run, change onto a bike at the 8 box adverts.

@Tam. Can't be far off that but not used any assistance just plain old pig headedness. Been tough at times as everything at one time or another was blamed on a lack of Nicotine.

Well I have managed to throw another spanner in the works by joining up at North Gailes health and Spa. I signed up for a joint membership with Fiona and have an induction and trainer session at 11am tomorrow.  :)

For £18 a month extra (for Joint even though fiona doesn't play golf it's £5 cheaper than individual) I can join the golf club. The course is uninspiring and short but it would allow me to maintain my handicap and be a member of the SGU without major outlay. For my £18 I get free golf, 3 60 ball tokens for the range a week, 4 £15 per 4 ball guest vouchers a year, Weekly medals and 20% off lessons. I have just signed up for the Gym and Spa which I get 2 passes for guests a year to sample both.

Keve will be pleased to know that all the machines have a built in TV and I like the fact that you can log into the machines and it will load your workout program. I'm not sure about the fact it logs all your work so that you can review it when you like or the gym can monitor your progress. There are also a full program of classes that are included with membership so I'm quite happy with the package.
