TPI, Worth a look
« on: Mar 22, 2010, 16:24:14 »
During my fitness test thing yesterday (I'm fat and unfit BTW) The instructor mentioned that one of the other guys is a TPI qualified instructor and offers this as part of the service provided by the Gym.

I spoke to him today and as I know a few of the people on here have mentioned it before what are your current thoughts on this. As I'm only just into my 2nd week I am going to concentrate on general fitness with Cardio, Weights and some floor exercises to get me to some form of fitness level then look at golf specific workouts and classes.

So what are the thoughts of you guys.

Cheers

If you're getting into a fitness regime then I'd say its worth it to add it into your routine.
Have you checked out the mytpi website? Plenty of golf specific work outs. I tried the core stability ones (I think thats it was called) and found a good bit of consistency with my big swaying swing.

I'll look over it.

From the conversation I think he has a couple of work out programs in place at the moment but I can book a set up session for him to put a personal program together for me.

Thanks Tam.  :thumbup1:

I'm sure Robin (3PW) will chime in as I think he's been doing it for a while.

Sounds about right.

I'm afraid the instructor at North Gailes is not my type.

I'm probably not his type either.  :p

Harsh but fair  :chuckle: Think of the Aussie aerobic girls on sky and you'll be close   :chuckle:

TPI is good for building up core strength and stability/balance, well worth doing. I need to get back into training don't feel half as strong as when I was doing the exercises.

I'd struggle with prone planks with an instructor like that :)

My teaching pro has posted his TP tests on Facebook "colin fisher golf"

He scored a handicap of 5.

But it was interesting to see the exercises. Think i'd be pretty much in line with my golf handicap as my flexibility is still rubbish!

been using the mytpi site for 6 months,i simply showed my gym instructor the exercises online and he tells me yes or no and adds his own little exercises, the core and stability are bruising but they do work as my stability in my swing is improving.

Definitely best way of going! Custom Fit exercising!

For those of us too old/fat/otherwise unfit, Pilates is very good for golf. Basically mild stretching and gentle core work that improves flexibility and stability without the punishment that serious masochistic gym sessions provides!

Serious question.....

I'm tempted by all this TPI stuff as flexibility and core strength I am seriously lacking. But the only reason for me doing this over seeing a generic PT (which I can get for free) would be to  give me a chance of getting something of a chance to improve my golf to a less embarrassing level. For those who've tried TPI......have you seen any measurable differences in your golf?

In a word - yes.

I have used a TPI instructor for a while but it needs to be the right one. There are level 1 instructors which to be honest anyone can get certified. You need to get a level 3 FP if you want real benefits otherwise it's pretty generic stuff.

I use an instructor called Kevin Duffy and he is a level 3 (one of only 2 or 3 in the country so I am told) and is FP to a good few professionals on the tour (men and women). I have used another instructor Adam Kerr who was very good but not a patch on Kevin.

My primary aim was to work on strengthening my back and be able to play golf comfortably. He told me it would take a lot of work and about a year to get things right. Touch wood, it's been nearly a year since I started seeing him and I have not really had any bother with the back.

He has worked on golf specific as well and he is quite a task master.

In essence you need someone who can identify your issues whether it is golf or other and target the areas that will help negate those problems. He is quite innovative with his exercises as well so keeps it interesting.

If you have back problems - then all he will do is tell you that you need to work on your glutes!

Good luck.

Do they do any exercises for those of us with slipped discs about to break?
