Trevose GC, Cornwall - Discuss

Trevose was, for me, a real tale of two halves. The front nine excited me no end. Despite playing alone, I was moved by more than a few shots to exclaim aloud how wonderful they were. The back, however, moved to the less dramatic inland area of the property and was a bit bland on the whole.

The opening five holes was a rollicking start, the first two running towards the coast, before turning to run along the beach for the next couple then back inland and uphill on the 5th. Standing on the 6th tee, I was in heaven and I struggle to imagine a more enjoyable stretch of golf anywhere.

Trevose lost its greens about five months ago, all 18 of them reduced, I am told, to dirt. The grass is growing back, and looks pretty good in the pics, but is still horrific to putt on, and should provide some nostalgia for anyone who played the pinball machines a lot as a kid! The ball, as it slows, cannons from tuft to tuft, making it pretty hard to hole anything longer than two feet. The close ups give a better impression of the state of the putting surfaces.

The club website hosts a fantastic fly-over of each hole.

Not a bad way to start the day. An amazing view of the Atlantic and a panorama of countryside. The 1st tee is in the foreground, with the opening hole running away down the hill, through the saddle of the dunes, framed by bunkers either side.

A pretty straightforward second shot awaits a tee ball that splits the dunes, but the small rise short-right hides a front bank that allows the ball to be run onto the green, angled to kick the ball left onto the putting surface.

Trevose doesn't have the dramatic dunes of St Enodoc just five miles north, but as this shot looking back up the opening hole demonstrates, it's far from the open, flat paddock it sometimes gets labeled. The front nine has a much more rugged terrain than the back, and is much more enjoyable and memorable for it.

Got to play here last Friday while on holiday. Have to agree with what Scottt said about the front 9 being a lot stronger than the back, although I did like a few holes on the back 9. I took my own pictures which can be seen here http://photos.apotterirwin.com/zp-core/admin-edit.php?page=edit&album=trevose

The one thing I didn't enjoy was that when I called up to book I was given a tee time of 7.30 due to me being a high handicapper. While I was OK with this as it would free up more of the day to enjoy the holiday, what I did find annoying was that nothing bar the changing rooms were open when I turned up. It got to a few minutes before my tee time when I found someone who took my card as security and stuck it in reception to pay up later. I was unable to get any drinks from anywhere and when I enquired about the half way hut, I was told it was unlikely to be open when I got there. It meant that when I finished the front 9 I had to walk back in to get some drinks.

I wouldn't have minded so much if this had been relayed to me when booking but at the end of the day I am paying the same as everyone else to play the course, so I should expect the same service as them. While I liked the course I doubt I will look to play it again.

That happened to me as well. Was told to be there at 7.15, and turned up to find the whole place locked. Eventually a guy fronted, told me to pay later, but I wanted tees and yardage book and he had to give me some of his tees from his bag and a yardage book from the caddie room.

I can't believe that appears to be a semi-regular stunt!!

How were the greens?

I played there Aug 2008 and have rarely been more warmly welcomed (certainly not in the UK) by the members and staff. The course was in fantastic condition, the weather amazing and the facilities, second to none (except for the food, which was crap and overpriced).

Would I go back again? Most certainly and particularly so since the "resort" has an in house surfing academy and She was surfing in Booby's Bay whilst I was enjoying the golf.

I do believe they had to squeeze me in earlier as they had a members comp that day and then a pretty big society. However it still shouldn't mean that the caretaker should end up sorting you out with a score card.

The greens were not too bad considering they had been tined and top dressed. Didn't really get any bobbly putts and they were quite quick and true.

Sounds like they have come back well. Last May I was there and they were still effectively dead.

Yep. It was in GI a while back about the greens. They had installed a system to recycle water I believe and it was going mouldy causing it to kill the greens off. Even with work ongoing they were decent so would love to see them in summer.

:chuckle:

Is that what they are saying?

Funny that all 18 on the main course were killed completely, but the rest of the course and the greens on the Headland and Short courses were not affected.

I seriously doutb that is what caused it.

I heard from a few different folks - though this is not authoritative - that it was a simple case of poison being confused for fertiliser and the greens being sprayed.
