Hitting an opponents ball
« on: Jun 07, 2010, 13:40:55 »
Think we got this right, but just to make sure -

Yesterday, 13th green at Eastwood, JohnC's ball was about 4 foot away from mine and about 12 inches outside my intended line of play. He asked me if I wanted it marked, I said no and the proceeded to hit the worst putt that I've hit for months, pushing it a foot off line and hitting John's ball  :banghead:

We replaced his ball and penalised me 2 strokes. Was that the correct thing to do? We were playing better ball matchplay.

Rule 19.5a isn't that clear -

"If a player’s ball in motion after a stroke is deflected or stopped by a ball in play and at rest, the player must play his ball as it lies. In match play, there is no penalty. In stroke play, there is no penalty, unless both balls lay on the putting green prior to the stroke, in which case the player incurs a penalty of two strokes."

Is there no penalty in matchplay?  Hole was lost regardless

Not sure now as it was matchplay as the rule below only states strokeplay?
Only at the bottom of the paragraph in the rule book does it say;

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE:
Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.

No penalty.

So whats the procedure?

Do you replace the opponents ball and play your own wherever it finishes or do you replay your own shot?
