is the CSS to low?
« on: Jun 13, 2010, 18:11:28 »
My usual band of nomads and I tend to play a variety of courses and we run out own handicap system based on the proper rules as we are no longer memebers of a club and our official handicaps have lapsed.

One of the courses we usually play has a par of 70 off the whites and Css of 70, but off the yellows (general play) we use it has a css of 67.

One of the guys in our group is a very consitent player and usually gets around with 36+ points (last 2 times 37 and 40) but with Css being 67 means he is not getting a cut but he is shooting under his handicap? (if I have this right).

Can we do anything?

This is not sours grapes as I shot 5 under my handicap on Saturday and scored 42 points  :bandit: but only got cut 1 shot so could go round every day and shoot 3 under or 40 points without ever getting a cut.

if you're running your own unofficial handicap system, surely you can do whatever you like? Maybe automatic 1 shot for the winner?

Although its an official handicap I do run it on a offical basis using the proper guidelines and would like to try and keep it that way.

Just wondered if anyone has come accross a course where the css is a lot lower than the par?

Yup - my home course.Just means SSS + CSS as far as a stableford goes becomes 38 or even 39 points at times as the course is adjudged to be 'easy' relative to its par.

If the place you play is Par 70,SSS 67 then to play to handicap you should ideally be getting 39 points from the yellows.

Sounds like he's not getting silly high scores, but more like the others are a little low TBH.....

CSS = Competition Scratch Score.  No course has one of those; it's a calculated SSS for a competition round.  I think you probably mean SSS (Standard Scratch Score).

It's impossible to calculate a CSS without access to CONGU authorised software as it has access to the required lookup tables for adjusting a course's SSS, or you have a CONGU handbook to read them from (they are NOT published online).
Nobody ever saw a slow player in a mirror.

Real example to clarify

Last night in our friendly comp, mate scored 42 pts off 26 with a gross 90

Par is 70 but SSS is 67, so is he within the buffer and therefore not cut??

Or is buffer calced off par not SSS

think you just answered my question

par 70 minus 64 = 6 no buffer

SSS 67 minus 64 = 3 = buffer

Former is correct, yes

Erm no...buffer is above, not below....i think this is where you've been going wrong.

He shot 42 points, which is 6 better than HC based on par.  However, SSS is 3 less than par, so 6 - 3 = 3 shots better than HC and so the reduction would be 3 x 0.4 = 1.2

As Ian said, buffer is below HC not above.

I wish!

The 24 is actually brand new in the sense I just submitted my first 3 cards to GCGB and they confirmed 24!

Best I got to officially was 20 and would ultimately like to get to 18 as a minimum but lots of work to do

ok one final dumb question...as I seem to see conflicting info on the web versus Ross's guide to handicaps...

When adjusting the gross score for a complete blow up on a particular hole do you take into account strokes on that hole

E.g. 28 handicapper receiving 2 strokes on a par 4...

is a 7 corrected to a 6? (double compared to par)

or is a 9 corrected to an 8? (double compared to par plus strokes)
