so I can't line up a club on the ground and then play my shot but can I hold the club across say my upper arms???

I'd guess it might be difficult to hit the ball that way ??? ;)

But yeh you can do that.

Jono and I discussed this after West lancs last week and looked up the ruling, in the end he was right.

he lined himself up for a shot then put a club on the floor before stepping back to confirm his alignment. I wasn't sure this was allowed but having checked the ruling you can use anything to align yopurself prior to your shot but that marker/mark on the floor made by the player must not be there at the time of playing the shot.

This rule does not apply when you are on the green though, at not point must anything touch the green that you may gain an advantage with for your alignment
I carry clubs but cant use any of them

This is what I do may or may not work for you though

I stand behind the ball and look at where I want to aim then I look for a distinguishing mark on the ground  it might be a tuft of grass a divot  etc.  that is in line with my ball and my target and a  foot to 2 foot in front of the ball.

When I then setup to the ball I try and ensure I am parallel to the line between the ball and this point I have picked out  on the ground.  requires a bit of visualisation as the line is imaginary.
