My club has not approved the local rule for GPS to be used in club comps.A few weeks ago I see the handicap secretary and his son playing in the comp. His son pulls out a Range finder on the fairway and uses it.Should he have been DQ'd or are LRF's exempt from the local rule?
Laser range finders and GPS are both banned unless allowed under a local rule. If the local rule has not been passed, the chap would be Dq'd.
I thought it was the other way round now? i.e. It was allowed unless banned.......
Why would you think that?
A Committee may establish a Local Rule allowing players to use devices that measure or gauge distance only (see the Note to Rule 14-3). However, the use of a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect a player's play (e.g. gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc) is not permitted regardless of whether such an additional function is used.In the absence of such a Local Rule, the use of a distance-measuring device would be contrary to Rule 14-3.
I can't imagine how they could draft one allowing one form of measuring device while outlawing others (unless they're trying to give themselves an unfair advantage or are just seriously stupid).
I was just curious in case I'd missed a Decision. The Rule book itself won't be changing until 2012 and they'll deal with issues via Decisions until then.On topic ... what is the local rule in place at your club, 3pw? Rhetorical question really unless you're there or can remember it off the top of your head.I can't imagine how they could draft one allowing one form of measuring device while outlawing others (unless they're trying to give themselves an unfair advantage or are just seriously stupid).
Not seen the local rule so that's what got me thinking. I asked about 4 months ago and was told no.Unless they've added the local rule recently or else he should be DQ'd IMO.
If you know he was in the competition then you are obliged to highlight this to the club. As you witnessed it then I believe that it is your responsibility to the rest of the participants on the day.
