Laser Range finder
« on: Oct 13, 2010, 12:03:29 »
My club has not approved the local rule for GPS to be used in club comps.

A few weeks ago I see the handicap secretary and his son playing in the comp. His son pulls out a Range finder on the fairway and uses it.

Should he have been DQ'd or are LRF's exempt from the local rule?

I suppose it depends on the wording on the Local rule is they have banned all digital measuring devices or soley GPS.

Should be DQ in my opinion as local rule should refer to 'Measuring Devices' which are either GPS or Laser Range Finders......

Laser range finders and GPS are both banned unless allowed under a local rule.  If the local rule has not been passed, the chap would be Dq'd.

Why would you think that?

Why would you think that?

A vague (obviously incorrect by your reaction) recollection that it was one of the changes in the last revision to the rules.

It's the other way around - they are allowed provided a local rule is put in place.

From "Decisions Related to Rule 14-3"...

Quote
A Committee may establish a Local Rule allowing players to use devices that measure or gauge distance only (see the Note to Rule 14-3). However, the use of a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect a player's play (e.g. gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc) is not permitted regardless of whether such an additional function is used.
In the absence of such a Local Rule, the use of a distance-measuring device would be contrary to Rule 14-3.

I was just curious in case I'd missed a Decision.  The Rule book itself won't be changing until 2012 and they'll deal with issues via Decisions until then.

On topic ... what is the local rule in place at your club, 3pw?  Rhetorical question really unless you're there or can remember it off the top of your head.

I can't imagine how they could draft one allowing one form of measuring device while outlawing others (unless they're trying to give themselves an unfair advantage or are just seriously stupid).

The rumour is that his club is run by Germans.  :hi:

Not seen the local rule so that's what got me thinking. I asked about 4 months ago and was told no.
Unless they've added the local rule recently or else he should be DQ'd IMO.

If you know he was in the competition then you are obliged to highlight this to the club. As you witnessed it then I believe that it is your responsibility to the rest of the participants on the day.

If the results are posted already, am I right in saying it would now be too late to get the result changed?

They're permitted at mine in comps, though there was no formal announcement made.

I asked a couple of committee members who admitted that a decision had been made to permit their use, but then the gits didn't even put a notice up.
