Pain from golf (physical - not mental anguish)
« on: Jan 11, 2011, 17:59:30 »
Anyone up for a bit of amateur medical diagnosis? I’ve got 3 problems:

Problem 1: Back of Left knee
The back of my left knee is giving me grief. It seems worse after golf. It's ok when I'm walking or with my leg straight, but when kneeling or kneeling and twisting I get a sharp pain. I can no longer sit in a chair with legs folded under me.  It seems like if I play regularly the pain is less.

I first noticed it when running a software training course. I was kneeling down to be at eye level with someone who was seated. When I stood up, it was like my knee had gone dead (and painful) and I couldn't put any weight on it for a while. First noticed it in Jan 2010 I think.

Problem 2: Front of knees
I also get pain in the front of both knees after golf. Very sharp pain that cause intake of breath. This is less frequent and usually disappears within a day. Doesn’t always happen either.

Problem 3: Wrist
I fell over playing 5-a-side in October 2009 and landed heavily on my right wrist. At the time I did nothing. Saw a GP last year who got me some physio around Aug 2010. The physio said he thought I'd caused an impact fracture and gave me some exercises with a big rubber band. I went 4 or 5 times but it got worse so I gave up.

Sometimes my wrist is fine and feels normal. A lot of the time it hurts, and hurts to press at the back. If you imagine the position of your hand if you did a press up, that's what hurts the most.

I'm 37, generally healthly but do a desk job so not the fittest. Apart from the pain, my handicap is also going up since these injuries.

Any advice? Should I bite the bullet and visit the quack?

PS I don't know if it's related, but since the wrist injury my right elbow clicks when straightening my arm, and if I put my left hand on the elbow, you can feel something move as it clicks. Not painful, but annoying.

Sorry to hear about your ailments Skanky, however, the idea of taking medical advice from a `golf forum` is scarey to say the least.
Have you read some of the golfing advice these forums throw up, and the member profess to know something about golf.
This isn`t aimed specifically at this forum whose members are generally fairly sensible, but cyberspace seems to be inhabited by golfers who could teach Tiger a thing or two aswell as out driving, chipping and putting him.
I am tempted to think that the same applies to Doctoring and many might not be too highly qualified to offer advice.
Your local Doctors Surgery would be a good bet for some sound advice and when he`s fixed you up your local golf Pro can help lower your handicap.
Hope youget better soon - both counts.

I think I have the same as you, I've had it for about 2 years now, it just keeps clicking randomly and sometimes crunches. Clicks are fine but when it jams then you hear a grind it really hurts.

I think I did it to myself when I was racing my old car with a friend on his field :( fun but the after affect is still being felt today.

£150-200 spent on a chiropractor will solve that

I should have done that through my free Bupa care last year when I was still at school  went to the physio instead and it wasnt too helpful. Just got ultrasound to try and fix it as well as some small stretches but no real effect on it.

I'll have a look around and see where a good one is, cheers.

I know all about that - starting to wonder if I'd be better not going every 4 weeks and see how I feel

I take your point, but thought I mind find someone with similar problems that had been cured :)

Jamie, is there any swelling associated with the knee pain? Like a fluid filled lump behind the knee?

John, can't say there is, back of both knees feel about the same. I wondered if it could be tendonitis?

It sounded like it might be a Bakers Cyst but you would expect to notice fluid behind the knee.

It's definitely one for the doctor but tendonitis is a possiblity. If it is then anti-inflammatories and rest are the only real treatments anyway.

The wrist sounds like the fracture hasn't set properly as you didn't get it looked at when it first happened. Not sure what the options are there really. Again, one for the doctor I'm afraid.
