Provisional Ball
« on: May 30, 2011, 20:43:24 »
Played in a 4BBB today and played with a right tw@* - one of the know it all, gonna say it all type.

Anyway, his partner hits one OOB and plays a second ball off the tee. He doesn't call it his provisional - his tw@* of a partner does AFTER his partner has hit it. Is this ball then in play???

Can the non playing partner call it a provisional AFTER the other one has hit it? Personally I don't think either A) the non striking partner can call  it and B) it can be claimed to be a provisional after the shot has been hit.

Would really like to clarify this - really fuc****g annoying playing 18 with a bloody jobsworth!

If you don't say it's a provisional it's now in play. In 4BBB the player making the shot needs to declare it a provisional before he takes a swing, if not it's now in play, OOB or otherwise

No you can't call it afterwards but if the first was OOB then it's irrelevant

I think I understand now. Thinking back, he actually found his first ball and continued to play that one. So because he hadn't called his second a provisional before hitting it, he should then have played through with his second ball despite the fact he found his first. His partner calling it a provisional after he had hit it made no difference - as you all say, his second was in play the moment he hit it.

Thanks guys - appreciate your comments, I was festering all evening after this. Just something that really bugged me after some of his other comments.

Similar happend in the Brechin Mens Open on Saturday
Player hits ball on par 3 well right.
Says he'll play another - i asked "are You playing 3 off the tee or a provisional?
he replies - in front of me and our third player and the three ball behind - This is 3 off  the tee. He also hits it right. then plays another provisional

He then finds his first and second balls and makes as if he is going to play his first ball. I tell him - you can't your second ball is in play as you clearly stated that you were playing 3 off the tee. Got upset - and ended up with a nine

No they were well out of it at this stage!

Go put him straight (in a concrete suit)

Lol!

Justice served!

so was the first ball not OOB after all?

Personally, I could have sworn his first ball went OOB - I saw it jump out - he then went and found it in a place that I didn't think he was near. I drew my own conclusions tbh, but they were so far out of it at this point I wasn't bothered. It was the old geezer spouting the rule book out for 18 holes that really wound me up.

Believe it or not, I've got another one that got to me as well and will post that one separately!

Thanks again guys.

It's at times like these why it's a good idea to carry a R&A Rule book in your bag

Why would that be illegal??? You're not using it as a distance measuring device are you?

Wasn't there a thread about this recently? I seem to recall reading that using a mobile phone with distance measuring capability was illegal but it was some time ago and I'm probably wrong......

Yes using it as a DMD but not for getting a ruling from the R&A app I'd imagine
