Golf/Tennis elbow.
« on: Jul 25, 2011, 10:11:15 »
Seriously needing some advise to help ease golf and tennis elbow. I've got an appointment for the docs on Wednesday but something to help just now would be good.
The tennis elbow is in my right arm and the golfers in my left. Fecking agony although it doesn't really affect me when I golf but I suffer after. I can't even lift a cup or glass to my mouth without using both hands.
I've been using Ibuprofen gels but the don't do much good.
I actually thought I'd broken my elbow on Saturday at one point it was so painful.
Any help tips etc appreciated.

I had golfers elbow.

I had a one of those straps that you tighten round your forearm, it helped me, others have found it not so good.

I know some who changed the shafts in their irons to graphite and that helped him.

There are also cortisone injections which I understand work well.

I know you wont like this but the only immediate help is rest. I had golfers elbow in my right arm last year and tried everything, support bands, anti inflammatory meds.

Longer term what really helped was strengthening exercises and some good stretching before and after a round and anytime in between.

The cause for me was poor technique in my golf swing coupled with being unfit. Basically I was not rotating towards the target enough and flipping at the ball with my hands and arms. I still suffer from the poor technique but not as much.

Look at this link for stretching the tendon, it shows a strengthening exercise too.

Rest.

Thats what the doctor will tell you to do.

Sounds like you have a serious strain if you cant even lift a cup or glass. My case a couple of months ago was painful but nowehere near as debilitating as yours seems to be. I did use some of those sticky cooling gel pads for a few days....just applied them to my arm during long periods of relative inactivity like driving. Ibruprofen capsules also seemed to help relieve the pain.

One question....do you hit many balls on the range?...I'd imagine that repetetive hard impact of club on range mat could also not do the elbow any good whatsoever.

I was getting really bad golfers elbow and now don't suffer, I did two things:

1. Used the strap thing occasionally, never when playing but as a preventative when it began to ache
2. Changed my grips from GP TV Full-Cords and GP NDMC's to Lamkin 3Gen's.

Not saying it'll work for you but since the grip change I've not had an issue but then I have gone from pretty hard grips to one of the softest which hasn't been easy.

I had a similar issue though not to the extent you have.
I most definitely believe that it was too much range ball hitting, as Nick suggested.

Rest is the only real cure, the tablets and patches will just remove the pain and allow you to make it worse.

I've had this in both elbows on and off for the last 18 months or so. Seem to have managed to get rid of it now (touch wood) - was very painful, like you say after playing not really during, I used the following techniques to manage it:

1. use of an epicondilitis clasp when playing or practicing
2. icing the sore joint every night for 20 minutes or more

However it only really started to get better when I went to see a remedial therapist for intensive (and very painful) massage treatment. I combined this with stretching and rotation exercises (including the use of a powerball) and I seem to have got rid of it for now. I would also say that I only started to see symptoms after I changed shafts from Accra Steel stiff to KBS X flex - not sure if it was co-incidental, but the KBS were definitely much harder feeling (although produced a much better ball flight).

I've recently changed my irons to a lighter shaft on kinda opposite of you. Had to cancel the docs due to a family commitment tomorrow. Seemed better after a swim yesterday.

I had it badly on and off for a couple of years. It seems to have gone away probably because I'm playing less golf. It is bloody painful. What really scared me was the fact that it marred my ability to lift a pint glass to my mouth.

Not slept on my arm or anything so no idea how its happened but its pretty sore.

I've not hit a ball since Sunday so maybe its not Tennis elbow?

So a curry tonight then?  :chuckle:

Have a look into Kinesio tape.

Tried some out last weekend, I felt great after a round on Saturday.

Didn't have time to apply more on the Sunday (although you're supposed to leave it on I had a night out after my Saturday round) so I was naked for my Sunday round. Felt awful without it, really seemed to make a difference.

Not cheap, but as with all injuries if its not going to do any damage it's worth a try!

Been using the exercises in these videos :

The one with the elastic band around the fingers really seems to be helping.

Hope these are of use to some of you too
