Titleist Yellow DT Solo
« on: Sep 25, 2011, 14:41:22 »
I bought a sleeve as I lost too many balls yesterday, and I'd left my new Callaway Tour i(s) at home (again).

Well, out of ten I have to bear in mind that while it's not a premium ball, it's not a rock flite  (2) and the sheer existence of Exia mean nothing else can be a 1.

3/10

Durability  :picard:

I took said sleeve to the practice net, I hit each once with a six iron. A good quality club, and my ball striking is pretty good even if my swingspeed is ~78mph.

One hit each.  Each ball was now hairy.  One hit.

I changed it after nine holes, more because all three were in a state anyway than the pretence of having a clean ball to hit.

Distance was okay, I didn't notice my carries being wildly different from a Pro V or the previously mentioned Callaways and I had a long drive on 14.

Another thing would be the spin, no way did this hold the greens as well as a premium ball.

But it did excel in the category being yellow.  I didn't lose a ball today, so it was worth the £7.50 I was fleeced for in the pro shop!  :p

So is merely 'being able to find it again' a good enough reason to buy a ball that apparently sucks ?

In desperation, like me - yes. Otherwise no.

I'm just buying some z star yellows so I'll review them next thought it should be a forgone conclusion.

Tried a Z-Star for the first time last week (Yea,i know im stuck in a time-warp).

Although nothing scientific,my immediate thoughts were how high it went (As advertised mind !),and (Probably because of this) how it was definately was a little shorter per club on my irons compared to my normal TM Penta.Which isnt good when you play a fairly windswept course.....

Generally my opinion on shot height is that we amateurs tend to think a good strike should fly lower than is truly optimal - I've often gone to RM talking about hitting it too high and he's corrected me.  I hit a lower shot, and trackman shows me it was a worse strike & distance.

When I'm playing in wind I use longer irons - I can't get them up in the air, so they're perfect - I wouldn't choose a ball like the DT Solo for the same effect.  Admittedly I'd play a Pro V1x in the winter over a Pro V1, but that still has a lot of spin around the greens.

The term 'thin to win' has always been a fallacy in golf

Depends where your coming from regarding 'flight' TP.....

'we amateurs' covers a wide variety of ability for a better word of it.

If your thinking of a below average swingspeed lady or senior for example,or perhaps even an average club golfer; then they probably dont have the pure muscle and/or technique etc to enable them to generate much swingspeed and hence spin and lift. MOST people who dont hit it very far also dont hit it very high compared to those who hit the ball alot further per-se than them.

Of course the other side of the coin says that very high swingspeed players generally create lots of height and spin, and many are always battling that same high flight and excessive spin.

Different players are coming at it from different angles (sic) hence.....
