Hey,
I'm bored waiting for the delivery guys to come so thought i'd put together a review of current driver set up.
Firstly, how did i end up with this club?
Well, when Rob was back from the States on holiday over the christmas period i was talking to him a fair bit, usually about golf. We talked about each others games and it appears we like the same kind of thing. In my opinion me and Rob are quite similar golfers both of our weak shots are high pushes/slices. Rob noticed that i was currently 'woodless' and said he had a Sonartec in his 'stock room' that i could have. To be quite honest i was overwhelmed.
. Then Rob offered to put a 'Old shitty tour Callaway driver' he got ages ago. He described it as 'beat up and had a couple of skymarks' but it had sentimental value. So i told him to keep it if it had sentimental value. However, Rob being Rob insisted i try it and just send it back when i'm done with it. Rob= Legend.
So the next few days i spend waiting for the package to arrive and i came home from school to find it in the porch, exciting stuff. It was in a Matrix box which i thought was Rob being a bit of a joker! So i opened it and the first thing i noticed was a yellow DD2 grip, i'd wanted to try one of these and Rob knew that, so kudos to him. Then i pull the club out that is attached to it!! Callawat FT-5 Tour with one of Robs Custom Oziks!!!! WOW. After the initial amazement i realized that Rob had obviously made a mistake, i knew he had sold some of his stuff and he must have sent me the wrong package! So i PM'd him and he said no it wasn't a mistake and wanted me to try it
.
So the day after i take the club down the range along with the Sonartec ( Btw is also a great club) and to be honest i teed one up and my hands were shaking. There was so much adrenalin that i think my first swing was based on pure instinct and probably of the worst looking i have ever made. I was SO worried that i'd bloody break the thing! I must have hit maybe 50 balls with it with varying results. I found the head to be very responsive, i could tell straightaway if i had made good contact with the ball and whereabouts on the face i had hit it. With the shaft being quite light i found it made the head feel quite heavy, which felt quite odd at first but i'm getting used to it. Flight, well i can definitely say i won't be seeing the left hand side of the course for a while! The head is 2 degrees open and screams FORE RIGHT!!! However, on a good solid shot i get a beautiful little 5 yard fade, can't argue with that. Distance wise, it would be unfair to comment as i haven't taken it out on the course yet and range balls are pretty useless. I took it out last night and found much of the same, at least it's consistent.
However, maybe it's just me but after reading how great they were and they are obviously hyped up about on BSG i was probably expecting to much. I kind of expected it to CURE my driving woes and that was just my naivety. I think i can conclude that to improve your driving, equipment isn't the be all and end all, i'd recommend a few long game lessons. In the clubs defence, one of the main things i have found that it inspires confidence in me, this makes me feel more confident about hitting shots and i generally swing better. Would i be this confident with a £10 dunlop driver, no probably not.
To conclude, would i play this driver combo all the time, no. It's not to my liking due to the face being open and the fade isn't really what i am looking for. I probably couldn't afford one either! If you can justify the kind of money for the 'super high end gear' then by all means do it! It breathes confidence into your game and that for me is important. I see a bit like buying really expensive jeans like G Star and Diesel, they do the same job as a cheap pair from Asda but at the end of the day they feel better and make you feel good about yourself.
Finally, i'd like to say a BIG thanks to Rob for his generousity, the guy has helped me with EVERYTHING from my education to my golf. Best of luck to Rob with his future and i owe him a game at Augusta
.
Thanks
Mike.
