Golf fitness instruction
« on: Jan 06, 2012, 13:46:56 »
I have piled on the pounds recently and want to get fitter but am finding it very hard to find any golf fitness specialists around London...I have gym membership near work but they don't have any trainers who specialise in golf....I am thinking as I do a very limited amount of stuff other than play golf once a week (if lucky) and go to do the odd spinning class I might as well try and focus on golf fitness rather than do boring general stuff - I find general gym work tedious at best but if I knew it was directly benefitting my game I might have stronger will power :blush:

Anyone have any thoughts?

I was about to start a thread on golf fitness and posting vids of what tour players do (and you can do) at home or in the gym. So maybe a I will get round to it over the weekend.

I have worked with Mark a long time ago when he came to Styal to do the 3D bio-mechanics stuff. I posted stuff up years ago and they were the first to use K-Vest technology etc. He worked with Ramsay McMaster (famed bio-mechanics guy - just died before the new year) and he knew his stuff. Very nice guy and very motivated. He is only a level 1 Fitness Instructor though so you need to be careful. Knows his bio-mechanics though!

Personally speaking I wouldn't worry too much about golf specific unless you are very fit already.

If you do Pilates you'll see the benefits for golf, and in general every day life.
Also doing some HIT/cardio will help shift the weight. Although the pilates i went to last year was pretty intense as it is!

Season 1 24.1 -> 16.8 1 medal
Season 2 16.8 -> 14.1 2 medals
Season 3 14.1 -> 12.5 Lanark Open
Season 4 12.5-12.6-12.3 2nd Bruce Sharp Trophy
Season 5 12.3-12.5 'Wasted Year'
Season 6 12.5-

I was told not to do pilates by the golf fitness guy. His analysis of my problems showed that it was causing more problems! So I would say get screened etc.

:chuckle: Not like he would have a vested interest ;)

Core strength and flexibility will help in life or golf and TPI stuff looks like pilates to me.

one difference though, you were/are a cripple :raspberry:

depends how much money David wants to throw at it tbh. A screening would give a good basis to start from but on the other hand as fitness levels would probably be low, good exercise plans to start could easily be researched on the internet for nowt.
I carry clubs but cant use any of them

Was told initially by Leeds Rhinos physio as well as TPI guy. I didn't have the strength in the right areas to do Pilates.

Have to agree but it made a huge difference once I went down the route with Kevin. Tried all the rest and he figured the right way for me.

Practicing the classroom technique?  :D

Unless you are absolutely not ready for ANY fitness work - and Doctor is in best position to assess that - the genuine, but low stress/selective routine, Pilates is actually one of the best rehab-ish approaches. I suspect their idea of Pilates is not the 'Classical' one.

Swimming, or just walking in water to start, is a great , low stress fitness improver. Finding a convenient uncrowded pool is the problem though!

Out of interest have you ever spoken to a Pilates instructor ?

When I had my hip problem the osteopath recommended Pilates or yoga as a form of preventative maintenance.
Haven't had the problem reoccur  since doing yoga stretches.
