i live in exeter and have played it many times and i think a cracking course not long but have to think about where your placing your ball it also helps that the head greenkeeper in also a scratch county first team golfer so he is always looking to make the course tougher and more interesting well worth a visit i think the 17th is a tad mickey mouse but thats just an opinion

Thanks IBF! Can you expand on your thoughts a bit?  Often making a course tougher means less interesting e.g. narrower?  I'd like to hear some of the things he's pulled off.

Interesting that 17 doesn't really work for you. Was it always like that or did you enjoy it first few times?

I will do a photo tour of Thurlestone next and plan to visit Churston and Teignmouth next. What's you r pecking order of courses in the area?

i think he has just moved a few teest a bit further back thats all he is always striving to make the course that little bit tougher but because the heather and gorse is protected it cant be lopped down very much  17 i just think the tee shot is a bit unfair i played in a county event and hit 6 iron off the tee in the morn and it bounced soft and left me 240 to the green afternoon same conditions same strike same club i ran out of fairway at about 280 leaving about 150nof a 60 degree slope buried in hearther ha!!!  im currently  a member at teignmouth and really rate it as a track i was a member at bigbury for twenty years which is across the water from thurlestone i think bigbury is better overall that thurlestone but thurlestone has some cracking holes with a lot of character and i used to live about twenty yardsaway from churston so know that one well too really nice track tough first 240 par  three dont play in the height of summer as it just gets tooooooo bouncy yelverton is worth a look as well very pretty moorland course

I played EDGC quite a few years when staying in Exeter with work. Found it quite a pleasant course especially the view from the 16th tee as mentioned. Would want to play it again though as I think my game back then didn't really help me fully appreciate it.

Thanks for the reply.   My brother in law hasn't heard of the recession and has bought a place between Totnes and Dartmouth, so I'm having fun trying out these tracks. Might get down again next month.  I think they offer a lot of golf, at good rates.  Playing on my own doesn't bother me and the excellent views come as a nice distraction.

What can you tell me about the proposed changes at Churston?  As I understand it they are selling its current clubhouse and some land and getting  a new house with new holes at the far end of the current layout (so that should solve the problem you mention).   Iunderstand that 1 & 18 are not orignal Colt holes anyway.

Thanks for the mention of Bigbury that had passed under my radar.   I also like the idea of palying a course called Came Down (which I believe is a biblical reference).  Have you played it?

the clubhouse which was built with lottery money is going to be knocked down and the first and last are being destroyed and the old practise area will have two new holes and and the new clubhouse

as far as came down goes that is a good hundred miles away but my dad used to be a member there for about ten years and i believe it is a nice track also
