Tobago Plantations

After having worked out I managed to get for a round on the Plantations course this afternoon. It's pretty annoying not getting out to play a golf course when the 14th fairway runs past your bedroom window.
The Plantations is a much under used course, probably due to the cost and that the locals prefer to play at Mount Irvine a little bit up the road from here. Because we stay at the resort we get a decent discount and it works out about 15.00 pounds a head for 9 holes, plus a buggy. We only have time to play on a Wednesday and because the sun always around 6.00pm there is no time to play 18.
The course itself is in great condition and is extremely dry despite all the wind and rain. We chose to play off the white tees, but you have a choice of 4 - red being the shortest, then white, blue and the yellow championship tees. I have to say I really enjoyed my round and while there was nothing particularly outstanding about the course, it was just a totally different experience to play a course in a tropical environment that was in such good condition. I'd also never had a buggy before and found it was a really relaxing time.
While the course is quite long off the tee and there is a fair amount of water about its not too penal with wide fairways and lots of bale out points. Tees and fairways are in great condition, but the greens had been treated with something that I assumed was some kind of fertilizer, but they were still pretty slick.
The best part of the front 9 which we played today was actually just at the 3rd and 4th holes where you play down towards the Atlantic and the fresh trade winds are blowing surf and spray up over the course. Being in the trades there is always a bit of a breeze here and although it was quite strong today it was either at your back or in your face and hardly across the course at all.
The clubhouse is quite welcoming although empty like the rest of the course as well a small range and practice area which was also deserted. I should no be able to do something worthwhile on Wednesday afternoons, but as usual work gets in the way of a good social life as I've got stuff to do next Wednesday, but I will definitely get back to play 10-18 next time out here.
I've got some pics which I will post later.
The Tobago Plantations is resort of upmarket apartments and villas (their words not mine) combined with the Hilton Hotel and Championship Golf Course. You can fly directly to Tobago with Virgin on a Thursday or Exel on a Wednesday and Saturday. Otherwise you can get a job here and let someone else pay.
