Mmm, I will keep my mouth shut as this is a public forum, but let's just say I have first hand experience of 4BBB 'tactics'  >:(

A gentleman would never stoop so low.
1. That particular tactic is an essential part of the game!
2. A gentleman would have to stoop to get face to face with some people.

There does come a point where 'tactics' can become gamesmanship - or even unsporting. That's where rules are needed - and current ones seem to work well.

What was your 'experience'?

Intersting points gentleman, personally I would never concede a putt if I wasn't also conceding the hole.  "It ain't over, 'til it's over" - R.Balboa

This appears to cover it:

7.2/1 When is play of a hole completed by a player so that he may practice as permitted in Rule 7-2?

Match play: Single When he has holed out, his next stroke has been conceded, or the hole has been conceded by either player.

Four-ball When both he and his partner have holed out, their next strokes have been conceded or either side has conceded the hole.
Note to players at The Addington. TP doesn't do gimmees, so don't give him any either. Out last in Matchplay fields then!

That ruling covers all cases then. Would be very bad etiquette IMO to putt out (as practice) before opponent putts out (for real) though!

Bit like trash talking in basketball.

Okay, now don't get me wrong, but if I wanted to "lay it down on my homies, get off my G, bro don't be messin' with my bitch..." and so on, the golf course is not where I would be partaking of such an activity.

I will guarantee that whenever you've played a match against someone (for fun or in a comp) they have indulged in some matchplay tactics. On the golf course its far more subtle than on a basketball court. But the end result is the same. Getting you off your best game.

Tiger does it all the time in strokeplay events.

It's just whether you
a) notice it
b) let it affect you

I'm guessing you are b and not a.

I wasn't criticising golf_bhoy, he just reminded me of worse times on the course, and like I said I'm keeping quiet on the subject, but if you want to see me burst a blood vessel, ask me about it.  Just not in our clubhouse.

This one's been bugging me all day, but I've figured it out now.

The clue is in the question - "practice as permitted in Rule 7-2",  which is "A player must not make a practice stroke during play of a hole.".

Only if you take out "practice as permitted in Rule 7-2" can it be read as allowing practice before the hole is completed.
