Advice Please
« on: May 05, 2008, 20:41:48 »
Playing in Society trophy yesterday, I carded level par 72, which due to the rain and wind was eventual winner. Won with BIH against another member who stated that he was unsure of handicap as played the day before and it may have been adjusted overnight by his home club. However he signed for his 72 and congratulated me on the win.
Today he claims that he had gone up by 0.1 and that was enough to raise his hamdicap by a stroke and claims prize.
I was under impression that is a card is signed that was it final. Other members state that as long as he didnt sign for a higher handicap he can change once handicap verified.
Just curious what the official ruling is and would welcome advise from those in the know.

As far as I'm aware if the guy signed for a 72 that score stands. You cannot submit a different score after the fact and the only difference would be if he signed for a lower score in which case he would have been disqualified.

I'm sure GB or Foxholer will be along to discredit me on this but that is my take on it.

Spot on Stevie.

Players obligation is to specify his handicap. If he's not sure of it, then he should play off the lower one - as he'd be disqualified if he played of the higher one and it wasn't correct!
There is an exception to that (the disqualification) being where he took the SSS as his reference point and the CSS turned out to be lower.

However, the handicap that he states on the card is the one that is used - for that competition.

So Scotstam wins. Maybe this will encourage players to prompt their clubs to get results up quicker than they do - though there is a process to cover the situation.

I reckon he's DQ'd.

Certainly, his place cannot be upgraded.

Why?

Ross

For being a leech.

It's just an opinion.

It really doesn't take much effort to know one's handicap before a competition.  I've been in a position where I believed my handicap would be cut over night, and checked it out as soon as I walked in the club house with a card that might engender a cut.  That way you can figure it out yourself if it isn't going to be published in time.

To state your handicap at the beginning of a round, and then ask for a revision when it looks like you might have won is at best hopeful at worst...well.  I just don't like it.

Hangin' 's too good for 'im.

Playing in Society trophy yesterday

To me, the bit in bold is the most important bit. It is a society game which should be fun and a chance to meet up with friends and play at a different course.
