Bridgestone B330 RX - Discuss
« on: Sep 26, 2008, 15:02:27 »
3puttwizard kindly sent me a sleeve of the RXs this week (thanks Robin) and I gladly tested them at the Kings Gleneagles on Thursday.

The info from Bridgestone is they are optimised from amatuers with a swing speed of less than 105mph.  That was what got my interest as my pussy swipe/slap swing would need steroids and nitrous oxide to get past 105.

I prefer a ball that doesn't feel too soft or too hard off the putter and for chipping.  Think of balls like TM TP Red (original), Callaway HX Red (why did they stop making them?).

As soon as I got the balls from Robin I had them out straight away for the carpet test.  I use a carbon steel putter (Byron 006) and it offers me good feedback on feel.  I compared the RX with a ProV1 and the original TP Red.  It was in between the Prov1 and TP Red in terms of how soft it felt.  Not too mushy like the ProV1 and not too clicky/hard like the TP Red.  Which is good in my opinion.

On to Gleneagles for the play test.
Without the luxury of launch monitors, gps and lasers i'd say the RX is as long as the TP Red and longer than the ProV1.  Dispersion was about the same but most of my straightest drives were with the RX/TP Red.  On a few holes I hit the RX farther than my mate Frank who usually outdrives me :)

With irons i'd say for certain the RX spins less than the ProV1.  The ProV1 has a tendency to balloon on me for some reason (too much spin?).  The RX holds its line very similar to the TP Red, less spin than the ProV1 i'm assuming.
The RX still checks up well on hitting the green.

On partial wedge shots it does exactly what the TP Red does.  Two hops and then stop.  The ProV1 tends to hit and stop dead.

I would also say its as durable if not more than the TP Red and better than the ProV1.

To summarise I would liken it very much to the TP Red but it feels softer.  I can see this as my preferred ball for next year when they're widely available in the UK.

Thanks again Robin for the sleeve.  I owe you drink :)

Anyone tried them?

No Probs  ;) I've left myself with one of them to try out tomorrow - so it will probably last a couple of holes  :chuckle:

Got 2 dozen 330-S (new version) coming from the states so I'll try them out at the Shire and post a review.

I quite like the current 330-S, have you tried it?
The newer version is supposed to spin a little more off the driver, no idea if that suits you or not (and not wishing to pee on your picnic, like...)

I found a B330-S and played a few holes with it.  First impressions is that it is comparable in length to my usual balls (Inesis TD Tour/Srixon Z-URS).  It does however feel harder to hit which is probably why it is aimed at the higher swing speed players.  What did impress me was the spin on the greens.  Now I no it is very wet but I am not one normally able to get check back on balls but the B330-S could certainly stop pretty sharply.
May well try the B330-RX as they would be more suited to my swing speed.

The RX is a great ball. I swing around 110 and it takes that easy and unlike Pro V1's it does not scuff easily on bunker shots or pitches. I was suficiently impressed to make it my gamer

I tried the B330-S (Old version) on Sunday and I thought it was a good ball. Distance was good and spin with the wedge was particularly good. They were also nicely stable in the wind.

Compared to a ProV1 or a HX tour, the cover was relatively hard which meant that it didn't scuff up as much. However, I thought this gave it more of a good quality 2-piece feel rather than a 3-piece feel.

I only paid around £22 for a dozen brand new and I think that's a fair price.
