As i sit in a hotel room in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the contrast couldn't be much greater than the course I played the other week, Santiburi on Koh Samui. Simply the most stunning course I've ever played - views around the island, phenomenal undulations, jungle and palm trees abound. If anyone is heading out that way it's well worth your time. I wish I had my own clubs with me instead of the junky ones I used but the club also rents out decent sets from Macgregor and Ping, plus maybe some others, for about 25 quid. I wish I'd done this!Green fee was 70 including the obligatory buggy and caddy charges but there are often 'Sport Days' where it's about half price. Not cheap but if you're out there. Some of the holes were amazing. Signature hole 17 probably plays with well over 100ft drop, a blind drive into a series of plateaus until you reach the dogleg. Drives can often be tight and balls are lost pretty easily, well mine were. Take plenty with as those in the pro shop aren't cheap or you can buy bags of half a dozen pick-ups for cheap at the drink huts along the way. The greens were so tough to read - listen to what your caddy tells you and obey! What I would think to be one way - up or down, left or right - would turn out to be 100% wrong, and I think I'm not a bad green reader. Must have been the hangover. EDIT: also holed my first ever full shot, 9i on the 9th for eagle. It did take a bit of a Shane Warne bounce but in it went all the same. Website, for better pictures, is santiburi.comA few pics for your delectation...me mate Rodge on the 2nd teeYours truly on front 9 with a drop of about 35m we reckonedBack 9 (15 or 16?) with Koh Pangan in the backgroundDownhill into 16 - swing needs workPretty nice view from the bar too (we only turned this way round for pic, obviously)I played plenty of crap shots and blew enough new Srixons into the jungle but after a glance around, all was right with the world. I'm going to go back again and taking my own sticks with me.
Pity I wasnt playing golf when I was travelling round Thailand.
From what i ve heard you still don't play golf
Oh they do wonderful things with golf balls out there....Or was that ping pong balls I'm thinking of?
