Illegal Grips
« on: Jan 15, 2009, 16:52:47 »
So..................

It has been pointed out to me, whilst at a fitting, that the grips on my irons are illegal as the rib is on the top.

I had not even noticed the rib until pointed out to me by the fitter

Before I point this out to the pro at the club to see if my hcp is invalid, can anyone give a second opinion on the call of the fitter?

Ta,
Ian

Not 100% on this but pretty sure I've read of Tour Players twisting their grips so the rib/reminder is at the 9 o 'clock position so they can put their hands in the same position every time.

My own view is that if a grip is legal, it shouldn't matter how it's installed.

The fitter is wrong, the rib can be anywhere on the grip as long as its straight.  Not sad enough to know the exact law but some pro's do this and people like Padraig and Langer don't have their rib on at the usual place so its good for them, fine for you.

Not illegal, you can orientate ribs anyway you want. Paddy does his so the clubface sits MEGA open.

Where ribs become illegal is when they are oversized.

I'd suggest you get yourself a new clubfitter if this is the things he's telling you

As always, when someone tell you a rule, ask them to show you in their rule book out of interest ;)
You'd be amazed that some experts on the rules, don't actually have a rule book! ;)

Thanks for the feedback folks - the grips are "oversize" Grum, I assume that is not what you mean by oversize ribs?

The physical size of the grip is fine, its the size of the rib, cant be over a certain size.

For example you can make your own reminder ribs with cable ties under the grip tape, but they are illegal, because its oversized(great reminder rib though! ;))

How the fook do you put ribbed grips on backwards and not notice? LOL

LOL - they came like that - all I noticed was the logo underneath which I assumed was aesthetically pleasing to the previous owner

I'd still love to know how you fail to notice the rib on the top of the grip

I've just had another "feel" - i would describe it as more of a lump than a rib - edges of it are barely detectable

Still - at least it means I don't have to regrip them before I shift them on - or ask about the validity of my hcp.
