Thoughts on the GPS Ruling: Regarding mobile phones.
« on: Feb 04, 2009, 17:09:20 »
From a debate on GM.

Do you think Mobile Phones are Legal for use as a DMD.

The rule states a device which can measure windspeed, direction etc which can affects his or her shots is illegal.

Now a mobile has access to the internet which can obtain such information: Does this make them illegal.

My opinion on the matter is no, as the information that got, is not local to the situation and only generic to a city for example and therefore can in no way affect his or her shot.

Whats your thoughts on the matter?

Most clubs have a ruling against mobile phones on the course which would render either argument as moot.

Most clubs have a ruling against mobile phones on the course which would render either argument as moot.

But that isn't a rule of golf, and as such is not enforceable.  It is merely about etiquette on the course, and so could simply be changed to outlaw the making/ recieving of phonecalls or texts on the course.

I have a GPS, and a laser, and quite honestly I couldn't give a flying feck if someone turned up with the entire resource of NORAD in their back pocket, they still have to hit the shot and I back myself against them and the combined might of their tour issue low center of gravity heel toe top bottom circle t cherry dot cameron highlanders detour due to roadworks on the A9 again that I will still beat them. And their mobile phone GPS sat nav wotsit with wind direction, club selection, and anything else I may have missed !

So, bring 'em on. Personally I think a far greater crime is mid life crisis men wearing JL stuff.  :D

Okay, so what if your club decided that the noise made by the new Nike Sumo driver was offensive and so decided to ban them?  Do you think that they'd be able to do it?

As long as the R&A say that the device is legal, and the committee has allowed the use of GPS, I don't see how they could stop you using a phone for that purpose.

But, as I said, they could ban you from using the phone to make and recieve calls and texts.

What you need to do is get a firmware 'upgrade' which renders your phone useless for all but the allowed GPS functions. Also the 'upgrade' is such that you can only activate/deactivate from a PC (don't ask me why). Then it would appear to be cool. I think.

I guess you can trust somebody to call a shot on themselves when nobody else saw the infringement - but you can't trust them not to look up the wind speed/direction on their phone!! As i've said before it's bizarre at best. But completely stupid otherwise.

I thought you had a bad knee, Tiger?  ???

That reminds me.....anyone else get the newsletter from Tiger saying he's back to playing now ? Just improving fitness and he'll be back on tour

To quote:

I did some work with Hank Haney for a few days last week and it's all good. I'm full-bore with my practice sessions and have no restrictions; it's just a matter of getting my golf endurance up. I don't have my golf stamina back yet.
