FT9 Review - Discuss
« on: Mar 04, 2009, 10:41:18 »
Venue: WOG Sidcup
Weather - bloody awful, belting it down
Right to left wind gusting to 40mph+ (there were a few trees on the road on the way there)

Picked up a Nike Dymo - put it straight back on the shelf. My god thats fugly.  :yuck:

Picked up a Cobra S9-1 Pro S/XCon 6 - very small head compared to normal Cobras.

Picked up the Cobra S9-1 - much bigger head than the Pro but the head just looks too big for my eye.

So only tested a 10 degree FT9 Neutral Zcom 60 Stiff.

http://www.callawaygolf.com/Global/en-GB/Products/Clubs/Drivers/FT-9Driver/Specifications.html

Specs say its 1 degree closed at address but looked square to me.

Asked him for an Xflex to demo. "We don't normally stock them so unless you order it and buy it, we can't get one"

Great thanks mate.  :thumbup1:

Off to the range..taxi was lying in wait 100 yards out. Myself and TP proceeded to try and hit it but the wind made it impossible.

Warmed up and the wind was so strong my 9 iron wasn't even going 100 yards.

FT9: Felt pretty whippy. At address its nice and square like the FT5.
Doesn't sound anything like the FT5. More subdued.
I was launching it quite high and the wind/rain made it difficult to see where it dropped.
       Great feedback on centre strikes.
       I'd rate it 8.5/10

I think I need to go back and test it in normal conditions and against a 9 degree head.
The shaft in it is 20gm's lighter than what I'm used to so I was probably spinning it into next week.

The guy mentioned a fitting session on a Vector LM with range balls, I might take him up on it just to see what the stats say and see the launch. I can compare them to my TM stats.

Wouldn't mind testing this head with a Fuji ZCom TW74 slapped in it but that's not a stock shaft in the FT9 and they aren't cheap either.

http://www.fujikurashaft.jp/zcom/lineup.html

Worth a look if you are in the market. A lot of new drivers are just plain ugly.

Hopefully test the R9 next week.

The Cobra S9.1D Pro is worth a look -I've had a couple of demo sessions with one (one in 9.5, one in 10.5).  Although I don't think the S Flex Xcon6 shift is right for me, I was very impressed by the driver.

I love the sand belt but it's not good for keeping up trousers in the rain...

3PW, think you already know this, but a launch monitor sess. with range balls would be a complete waste of time. Ball speed, launch angle and spin would be completely different from the ball you normally play.

Even a comparison with 2 clubs in the same session may be a little suspect due to the inconsistencies between the balls. (Sure there is a joke in there somewhere)

Yep I know.

I've been on 3-4 different systems now and they all come out with differing results.
WOG reckon they factor this in through their stats but god knows how they do it.

I took some balls to test last night (pickups from the course) and they flew way past the crappy range balls.

I did go on a LM the other week with proper Srixon balls but not sure what system it was but it reckoned I hit my 8 iron 180 yards which is BS.

I pretty much know my numbers now, just want to check out the flight.

Would an FT9 tour(1 degree open) with Draw weighting be  much different to a FT9 Tour (1 degree open) with neutral weighting?

ie how much does the weighting affect the flight? Just interested.
