Skycaddie and rangefinders will be allowed in ALL PGA events .
"Not the European Tour as yet, but I have been talking to a few Tour Caddies who will use it to help do their own pre Tournament measurements.
Well I guess SkyCaddie will be the "official" GPS for the PGA but that doesn't stop caddies using rangefinders."Not the European Tour as yet, but I have been talking to a few Tour Caddies who will use it to help do their own pre Tournament measurements. However I am sure that providing the Pros and Caddies are confident and comfortable with the measurements provided they will use them in time.I have to say this is a big step forward, the PGA will be making the announcement very soon."
Rob, I know that you love your Skycaddie, but don't forget that this guy is basically just a salesman, so I'd take all of this with a huge pinch of salt. The PGA have obviously signed a deal with Skycaddie, but that doesn't make it better than other GPS devices on the market, and I think that it's a bit wrong of the PGA to endorse one particular company. How would you feel if Ping became the "official" driver of the PGA Tour? From what I've read about caddies, most take their readings on the practice days with Rangefinders, and they have the advantage of being more accurate than GPS. I personally don't see this changing, unless Skycaddie start to sponsor individual players to use their devices. On a more important note though, I can see golf club committees deciding that Skycaddies are acceptable for use in competition because the PGA says so, but Sureshot and other options aren't because 'they're not used on tour'. Sounds like a huge can of worms to me...
As for "How would you feel if Ping became the "official" driver of the PGA Tour?" It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I have a choice what clubs I use and this wouldn't influence me....
Courses differ on competitions....eg ours allows GPS in normal play and competitions so its up to the course to decide. Our course allows all GPS's so Sureshot etc are included.
Well I don't suffer fools...
I realise that, and I didn't mean that it would affect you personally, but do you think that it is ethical for the PGA Tour to promote one golf company over another? They'd never do it with balls, drivers or irons, so why is it okay for GPS devices?
I realise that every course is different, and that it is at the discretion of the committee, but there is a chance that they'd say "If Skycaddies are allowed on the PGA then we'll allow them in competitions, but not Sureshots because the PGA doesn't allow them". The rules are already too vague and open to abuse, so this just clouds the issue even further.
Er, what about Tin Pot?
