Matchplay Handicaps
« on: Apr 22, 2009, 00:14:11 »
Got my first match play round soon so wanted to check how the shots allowance works. Opponent is off 13 and I will be off 20 due to comps max handicap. Am I right in thinking I will get my shots on holes 14-18 and 1-2?

Nope - you get 7 shots on 1-7.

Assuming it's full handicap difference.

It is full handicap, max 20. Will be tough for me as I am already 6 shots off at the start.

Stick to that hybrid, keep the ball in play on the short stuff off the tee and you'll do well. Especially on holes SI-1-7 where you get shots. He may try and send one out there to make up for the strokes on that hole, and if he's anything like me as a 13capper that will probably mean missing the fairway.

I was hoping to use that but I had a mare with it in the medal on Sunday. Hit some horrible hooks but seemed ok at the range tonight. I played with him on Sunday and he seemed pretty solid off the tee but then it could have been a good day for him.

Why is it max 20?

Because lower handicaps a certain they can't win a fair fight.

Why is it max 20?

I suspect this is a reaction to CONGU recommending that all singles matchplay ties should be played with full allowance.  Prior to that, many clubs used 3/4s for singles matchplay (with the idea being that people with 20+ HCs are bandits and have no place winning comps), so as that is no longer an option they are probably using the max handicap rule instead.

It's a bit of a git for me to already be screwed out of 6 shots as it is. However it does mean I go in to it knowing the odds are not in my favour so kind of takes the pressure off me a bit. Also give me impetus to try and get to playing off something below 20.

Interestingly, our club has always had a hcap limit of, I think, 20 in matchplay comps even when it was 3/4 difference.

Does it also have a big sign on the clubhouse saying 'High Handicappers Not Welcome' or do they only have to pay 3/4 of the subs?

Same at my club as well.  May be historic as club didnt use to allow golfers to join unless they had 18 handicap or less but set up an academy to provide entry for beginners to get into club to boost membership in recent years.

There was enough people moaning about the move to full handicap difference to make me think its unlikely the rule will ever be changed.

As a high handicapper I have to sit on my own in the bar.
