Adding to Equipment mid-round
« on: Jun 30, 2009, 15:14:35 »
Just need some clarification on this......I always thought this was disqualification in Strokeplay, but someone questioned this at the weekend........the scenario is that you tee off the 1st without any waterproofs or umbrella.
The heavens open on the 2nd tee and as the green is next to the Clubhouse and you won't be delaying play, you nip into the Club to get your Galvins and umbrella from your locker.

Ignoring the question of leaving the course / delays, surely this is 'adding to your equipment' - the same as buying 6 new balls at the turn. Equipment as defined by the Rules is not just clubs and balls.

Anyone got the Rules reference, or the Decision reference?

Ideas guys?

I'm pretty sure your correct as we had an incident in a team match at my old club about this when one of the guys who'd tee'd off up the 1st and then ran back to the car but was told he couldn't take anything as the game was underway and it was about to pish down.
The Bag is changing again...

I thought the golf ball rule was only for professionals? i.e they have to play one set ball etc.

Finger in the air, like James i'd be surprised if this was a breach of the rules. I've gotta head off now to see AC/DC, so will leave it up to someone else to look it up.

Look forward to knowing the answer either way :)

Ian - it's not the fact of one set of balls - the ball scenario would be I've hit them all bar one OOB and hence I need some more and so go and buy some - remember Tiger at Pebble in 2000 when he was down to his last ball at the 18th.
I'm sure you can't 'just go and buy some more'

In my view it is not a disqualification if you add balls to your bag during the round as quite a few people would be disqualified if they found a ball on the course.

You can replace a club if it is broken during play but you are not allowed to leave the course to do this. (Stupid but true)

If someone had who had not started there round had gone into the locker room and left the waterproofs and umbrella beside the green he could have put them on but leaving the course after the first tee shot has been hit to get them is a disqualification for leaving the course and not for adding equipment.

I'm sure I will be corrected as it is one of those strange rules.

Of course you can leave the course any time you want....what you are not allowed to do is to "discontinue play" without good reason or wtihout the Committee suspending play.

Rule 6.8 explicitly states that "Leaving the course does not of itself constitute discontinuance of play".

You can even add clubs to your bag at any time during your round if you started with less than 14 in the bag (as long as the new club hasnt been allready selected for play by another playerr) --see Rule 4.4

No rule seems to cover adding "equipment" (the definition of which does include clothing)...only clubs....so I guess if you want to add some waterproofs then I cant see a problem.

Stevie - in principle you could argue they should be disqualified; make interesting conversation mid-round and in the 19th! Same applies to balls that are X-outs or refurbished i.e the large number of refurbished Pro V1's about, as the rules claim it changes the playing characteristics unlike balls stamped 'PRACTICE' which is only a overstamping.

Si,

did you ever find out about the ruling on the guy using his team-mates driver for the remainder of the round?

Tony - not yet although I've been looking through the decisions - the key with is that it was a 4BBB comp, hence they were classed as a 'team'. The other thing also was the guy who lent the club didn't use it after giving it Gordon.

Not sure this correct either, Poults broke his 3 wood on the range at US Open, but the tour van where unable to make him one quick enough, However one got delivered to him on the 3rd Fairway I think

I'm sure you can't 'just go and buy some more'

It was tiger at pebble beach i was thinking of. The pro's have play by a different rule to us when it comes to balls. i.e they have to use the same ball the whole round. We don't. And i haven't read anywhere that you can't buy more balls during a round for amateurs. But i know that Pro's can't. So there are differences in the rules - depending on the tournament/organisation running the tournament. I'm not saying i'm right - i'm just working backwards (maybe wrongly) from what i know about Pro tournies. Anyway.....for those about to hit all of their balls OOB - I salute you :D

Rubbing it in now.....

Have a great evening - I'm very very envious.  Only heard recently that they'd added the Scottish gig.
