Tp mills Soft tail
« on: Dec 21, 2007, 15:14:49 »
I've had this putter for a few months now and I feel I can give an honest assessment of it.

Specs were:

Tp mills softtail
carbon head
352 gram head
33 1/2" long
5* loft

I had an intrigue for Tp mills putters since I got the chance to roll a few with Robin's Klassic model and at Hoebridge when Paul the UK rep popped along for a demo day. I generally know what i like and what suits my stroke. I have always Had a very much garden gate stroke unless putting left below right.

Excluding various failed experiment this year I have relied on an odyssey xg 9, I liked the flowing neck of the putter and the amount of toe hang which felt comfortable in my hands. I have tried various types of putter along the lines of this design and felt most comfortable with the odyssey and the scotty cameron del mar 3.5 which and I should be obtaining one of those in the new year for a trial run.

I decided I wanted to get a TP mills putter but it had to be the right one for me, No body likes spending £150 on a golf club to find it wont work which I have done a few times this year.

I did my research on various reviews from US based forums and it looked like the Softtail was for me. This putter has large amounts of toe hang which as mentioned before is suited to my stroke I feel. I got in contact with a chap called Jay Green, one of David mill's distributors for the US and others,

His details can be found HERE

I enchanged emails and pm's with Jay frequently until we got what I wanted out of the stock range. As this is a smallish company I could specify what I wanted a lot easier than the bigger companies of scotty cameron odyssey ect. I got Jay to find me the heaviest head he had in the softtail carbon heads. I love a heavy headed putter as it feels I dont have to hit the ball as hard and he came up with the 352 grams and I knew I would have to add some weight to it to get it to my preference. I also requested a slightly higher lofted head to accommodate my large forward press and a lie angle 1* flatter than normal, This could not be done on build as it was not a custom model so again they could find what i was after due to tolerances in production.

Specified length was 33 1/2" as I like to let me arms hang a little and I stand quite hunched when putting, also white painful for the site dot and a bog standard grey cover. So order placed, payment made and putter was sent out for delivery. This putter cost me £146 inc postage which I thought was a good deal as I had input into what I desired and as it wasn't a custom it was assembled promptly and shipped USPS express which also means parcelforce don't usually snuffle it at customs.

5 days later the putter arrived, no customs charges at all and a nice putter to boot.

I liked the feel of the putter rolling a few balls on the carpet with it, I did however need it heavier to suit my needs. a load of lead tape later and my preferred lamkin paddle grip it was ready for the course.

Foe those of you who have played golf with me before know my putting can at times be woeful and occasionally genius. This putter will not be an exception however I have not missed many short putts with it inside 3 feet apart from a bad stroke or a noisy northerner putting my off at my home course  :P

The feel off the putter is very soft for a non insert design which I like a lot, also the roll off the face is very good for me and my stroke, Due to my forward press it can lead to me popping the ball in the air a little as I'm technically hitting the ball into the ground. This however with the added loft prevents this a little.

My stroke feels tuned to the putter to some extent as the weight is very good now, its hard to describe but the putter now feels like an extension of my hands.

To some it up these putters are good if you can find one suited to your stroke, they are an acquired taste in terms of look due to the welding round the neck and rough face milling but i am not affected by those things nor am I a perfectionist with welding. I feel these putters have character to them as well as good roll etc. I most certainly think i will order a stainless version of this putter at some point next year. I will also have the current one refurbished by Mr mills at some point as my negligence has left the putter to rust up a bit which I don't mind to an extent.

A solid 4 thumbs up :)  :thumbup1: :thumbup1: :thumbup1: :thumbup1:

Any questons etc feel free to post them in the comments thread
