9 Hole Qualifing Comps
« on: Dec 05, 2009, 10:43:51 »
I have just noticed that 9 hole comps can now be classified as qualfing, with the unplayed 9 classed as a neutral 18 points or net par.

How do you think this will affect Handicaps? Will it be easier to get to lower handicaps as it easier to have a great 9 holes than a great 18? or will CSSS see that it makes no difference?

If they did these at my club everyone would be getting massive cuts. Our front 9 is considerably easier than the back. The prevailing wind means it's often played downwind and there are also 3 par 5's where as there's only 1 on the back 9. I regularly shoot 2 or 3 over for the front and come in 9 or 10 over after the back 9.

I reckon if I played the front 9 only as a qualifier every week and took 18 points for the back 9, I'd be off about 6 before long.

^ but if that's true, everyone would score better so CSS would take care of it?

Yeah, fair point. Is there a max amount css can drop? Wouldn't be surprised to see css 4 below par if that was possible.

Looking at the link Whitey posted, it says the following.

22.8   A Competition Scratch Score shall not be calculated. If a competition is abandoned for any valid reason players returning Nett Differentials below the Standard Scratch Score shall have their Exact Handicaps reduced to the extent dictated by the Nett Differential. A Nett Differential of zero or above shall not result in a handicap increase.

So no css?

I looked at my stats on our club website for my scores over the last year. My avg score for the front 9 is 4.4 over par. My average for the back is 7.7 over par. A level 2's back 9 score for me off 10 hcp is 5 so if I took my front 9 average and add it to a level 2's back 9 score my overall average score would reduce from 12.1 to 9.4 so 2.7 shots lower. My hcp based on this would therefore be about 7.

If there is no css calculated. It would have a dramatic effect on handicaps at my club if these comps were done regularly.

Like Supplementary Scores, 9-hole qualifiers are meant to be a way for players who struggle to play in enough 18-hole events to maintain their handicap.

There's no reason for it to be the front 9 or back 9, it really depends on how your course is laid out as to the most "convenient" route.  Ours are very limited tee-off times and a very limited number of events, so the main core of golfers don't get to play in them.
Nobody ever saw a slow player in a mirror.
