Have you ever called someone on a rules issue?
« on: Nov 13, 2007, 21:10:04 »
Just wondering have you ever called someone you are playing with for a serious rule offense? Did it turn nasty and have you ever called yourself on a big decision?

For me I've called someone for a double hit in junior club champs and they didn't take it too well at all. Was grumpy for the rest of the round especially when the club capatain told her how big a shot penalty it was.

Called myself for a few minor offences  >:( mainly due to being stupid. Eg.  cleaning my ball absent mindedly when I'd marked it on the fringe for another player.

Called my friends on some minor issues during friendly games just so that they would be aware of the rulings during any comps. Never seen an infringement during a comp myself....usually too busy looking for my ball.

Have called myself a number of times for double hitting, picking a ball up and then marking it etc!

I'm a bit confused here, what do you mean by 'how big a shot penalty it was'

The penalty for hitting a ball twice is that you have to count the original stroke plus add one penalty shot, so if you hit the ball into the rough by the green on a par 3 with your first shot and then had a double hit with your chip shot, your next putt would be your 4th shot.  Or at least that's how I've always interpreted the rule.

I've never had to call someone in a serious competition, but have often picked up mates during society or social rounds, more for information then anything.  The usual suspects with regards to broken rules tend to be:

 - Moving branches or brambles that are still alive
 - incorrect drops (penalty or otherwise) which normally are due to not understanding 'Nearest point of relief'
 - Thinking that they can play their provisional after finding their first shot in the sh*t
 - Grounding the club in a hazard (usually a dry ditch)

I called someone in a county pairs (foursomes) matchplay comp for improving their intended line of swing.

They were making practise backswings and snapping all manner of branches on the trees behind them. When i called them on it they claimed they were not actually improving their line of swing becasue they were not swinging from the same position that they would be when they addressed the ball (they were actually swinging 4 or 5 inches inside the ball position but the branches they were hitting and snapping would still be in play at the address position).

It wasnt even subtle like they were making a gentle backswing to see what was actually interfering.... they were having a really wild thrash and bringing down some significant wood.

They argued and didnt agree and insisted on playing on. My partner and I immediately informed them we'd make a claim on the hole.

Didnt make any difference...the guy duffed his shot and we went on to win the hole anyway.

I've called myself when I've struck myself with the ball and no-one has noticed.

Well next time you do it remember that it's now only a one stroke penalty instead of two.  ;)

That seems correct to me, and my understanding of this rule is that if you therefore hit the ball 3,4,5, or 6 times in the same shot (however unlikey that may be!), it still 'only' counts as the original stroke plus one penalty.

I was playing a medal with CG and a junior at my club and his ball landed on a path.

NPR woud have given him no stance (well in the middle of a big bush) and he wanted to drop the ball on the other side of the path to allow him to stand on the path and take the shot (again wrong), because full relief would have meant he was blocked out from going for the pin.  So it was hitting off the path for him.

He played off 4 and was needing an up and down to play to buffer - so felt bad (well as much as you can for a 15 year old who smashes the ball miles past you and plays off 4!) in terms of damaging his club, but i'm pretty sure he knew the rules and was just trying it on.

That's the only time i've called someone on a rule.
