After a few months off I've managed to get my head back into fitness mode.

Been watching what I eat again and gym 3 times a week + 5-a-side once a week. Strange thing is that I'm actually enjoying the treadmill, which is really encouraging.

Down to 15st 8lbs which is the lowest it has been for a few years now, and hoping I can sustain the momentum

thought i would update this slightly.

I was around 95Kg but now down to 90.6Kg.

Rowing wise I have stopped doing shorter distances and started trying to crack 10Km (doing it once a week). Did it in 39.21 tonight which is quite good but do feel that I should be pushing 39minutes within a month.

If it rains on saturday I will probably go to the gym to see what I can do 2km in. I think I should be able to do under 7minutes as I managed a click in 3.28 during my warm up on sunday and didn't find it too bad.
I carry clubs but cant use any of them

I'm officially a fat b*****d again as I've "let myself go" and have once more eased up over the 90kg mark giving me a BMI of >30.

Our office electronic "body fat meter" now shows me as 34.3% fat.

Time to get into action methinks.

My eldest son (14) has been going to the gym 2 or 3 times a week weight-training for the past few months and amongst other things wants a tub of this for Xmas:

Protein shake

Hes a decent lad,a good footballer and seems to be into his health and fitness quite seriously. We dont want to stop him (Especially if being health wise means it keeps him away from alchohol and drugs),but will it really be of benefit to him, because if he gets even more serious about his training, its going to be a serious monthly outlay.

Does this stuff need to be taken just before a training session ?

? ? ? ? ? ?

For the last 6 weeks I've been cycling to and from work in Edinburgh. For those of you who don't know, Edinburgh, like Rome, is built on 7 hills. I'm doing between 12 and 14 miles a day depending on chosen route, thoroughly enjoying it and the weight is just falling off.  :woot: One other totally unexpected side effect is that it seems to have dampened my desire for dangerous in-between-meals snacks such as family sized bags of peanut M&M's....

Seriously guys, if you are middle-aged, really want to exercise and lose a bit of weight but can't cope with the impact issues / lower back pain associated with running / jogging, then cycling is the way to go.

Start of October weight - 17st4lbs.  :yuck:

Mid November weight - 16st2lbs.

15st. in time for Xmas ?

Does this stuff need to be taken just before a training session ?

It's actually better to take it within 20 minutes after your workout but back onto the point........................

As the name suggests it is a supplement, if you get in the right amount of protein etc every day from your usual diet then no, this would go to waste. On the other hand if you need help cramming the stuff the shake gives you into your normal diet then it is an easy way to fill that void.

If he asks for creatine then that is a different story.

does that make sense?

Lets just start that I think creatine is an amazing thing.

From my understanding it is a natural substance but when you have it in a shake or capsule is far higher concentration than your body could produce. It basically stops the lactic acid affecting your muscles so  instead of doing 8 reps at your max weight you should be able to do 10. This will mean that your muscles learn how to do something new and their answer will be to grow. You should be looking to do it in a cycle of say of four/six weeks on followed by four/six weeks off. When you are in an off period than you should try an maintain the reps/weight you have been doing while you have been on it again teaching your muscles something new as you will this time have extra lactic acid to overcome.

make sense this time?

Edit :- having read the wikipedia explanation it would seem I'm talking more bull than GB but it makes more real world sense to me.

PS - Again not essential but can make gains easier

Got a shower at work?  We don't and they complain like mad when I cycle to work on a warm day.   :chuckle:

I generally don't care about the complaints especially from two of the women who drive despite living less than half a mile from work.  :loser:

I have this image of a couple of bingo wing ridden harridans who each weigh around 15st. but insist on wearing figure-hugging clothing which makes them look like a bag of shite which has been tied round the middle. Am I right ?  ???

We do have a shower at work but as I am working temporarily in a warehouse, there are no offensive olfactory issues regarding work colleagues to worry about.
