Meditation
« on: Jun 02, 2012, 21:40:34 »
Have noticed that when I find myself in my most fluid, relaxed state on the golf course it is almost as though I am floating around the course on a cushion of air. I feel totally at one with myself and the world around me and I usually play some pretty decent golf. i'm not so relaxed that i dont feel tension when stood over a tough drive or a tricky putt....its just that the tension seems to wash over and around me and I expel the bad bits of tension and use the good bits (those that help me focus and blot out what's happening around me) to help me make a good shot.

It sometimes almost feels like I'm wandering around the course having been almost hypnotised into some sort of trance and I feel a sense of calm that I can only imagine would normally be actively reached after a period of intense meditation.

I know less than f**k all about meditation, but was wondering if some of the more enlightened tyes around here had ever tried it, and maybe had some recommended reading that might give me some tips about actively achieving this inner sate of calmness that sometimes washes over me without warning.

Nick, have you ever tried any of the self hypnosis techniques, or any of the tapes/CDs/MP3s that you get for that purpose.

I've always found it very useful for switching off from the world, and avoiding becoming a murderer....

Well, Nick, you may wish to trawl t'interweb for Eckhart Tolle stuff.

I think he does "spiritual enlightenment" more than meditation - if it helps to put your head where you want it to be, then who cares, I guess.  I seem to remember listening to an audio book a few years ago - he went on about seeing a lot more around you - sort of like your "being in the zone", hence why I bring him to your attention.

I can't personally recommend anything, as my skepticism / cynicism prevented me getting past the 3rd or 4th track of the CD!

Kev, I've bought several from - http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com/
Obviously their Lose Weight ones must be defective, but I use a couple if the stress reduction ones and so far I haven't any reason to complain. Think I might even have a golf one somewhere.

Years and years ago, I had a book called "better golf through self hypnosis". Actually was pretty effective at teaching you how to get into a deeply relaxed state. It made onions taste like apples, but did feck all for my golf...

Zen Golf by Dr Josef Parent, it's like a Buddhist Bob Rotella.  Lots of very good techniques and stories.

This week was typical of my golf recently. Practise and lessons are near perfect but once I walk onto a golf course I honestly can't hit even an average shot to the point where I'm taking half swings and punting up the fairway. Old man golf I think Ally called it last time we played. Trying all sorts of switch off techniques with my pro. Done a -4 last week out on my own practising so getting really frustrated.

Cheers for the links Jim and Capn Ahab I'll have a look at what theyve got.

I've read the Parent book and I suppose its like finding a decent swing coach....eventually youll hit upon one whos teaching style matches your learning style....and Zen Golf just didnt really mesh with me....but thanks for the suggestion anyway.
