A - The player may only remove the sand by picking it up or brushing it aside with his hand or a club.
B - The sand may be removed by any means.
C - The player must not remove the sand.

Correct answer B

Explanation: Sand and loose soil on the putting green may be removed without penalty (Rule 13.1c).

Question 2

In match play, a player marks the position of her ball on the putting green, lifts the ball and sets it aside. By mistake, she putts the ball from the spot at which she set it aside. What is the ruling?

C - The player loses the hole.

Correct answer C

Explanation: When a ball is lifted, it is out of play - see the Definition of "In Play" and "Wrong Ball". When the player made a stroke at her ball which was out of play, she played a wrong ball, the penalty for which is loss of hole. (Rule 6.3c)

A - Player B loses the hole.
B - The concession stands and player B has completed the hole in 4 strokes.
C - Player A can withdraw the concession and B is considered to have holed out in 5.

Correct answer B

I actually answered incorrectly to Q1 above and said A where the answer was B. Didn't read it properly, but then again how else are you going to remove sand from you line other than with your hand or the club???

Any way you want as long as you don't press down....waft away with your towel, lie down and blow it away with a straw or get out your hand held dust buster vacuum cleaner as one of England Golfs rules guys did in a demonstration. Everyone on the course told him he couldn't do it and all he said was "show me in the rules where it says I cant do it". He was right. any means you like as long as you don't press down.

For most folks though it will be a hand, towel or club!!

Round 8 Answers

Question 1

In stroke play, a player's ball is half buried in the rough. Without saying anything to any other players in the group and without marking its position, the player touches the ball and rotates it. By so doing she identifies the ball as hers. What is the ruling?

A - There is no penalty.
B - The player gets one penalty stroke.
C - The player gets two penalty strokes.

Correct answer B

Explanation: If a ball might be a player's ball but cannot be identified as it lies, the player may lift or rotate the ball to identify it, but the spot of the ball must first be marked and the ball must not be cleaned more than needed to identify it. (Rule 7.3). The player does not need to advise anyone that she is going to lift the ball.

Question 2

When ground under repair is defined by a painted line on the ground, the line itself is in the ground under repair.

A - True
B - False

Correct answer A

Explanation: Definition of Ground Under Repair.

The edge of ground under repair should be defined by stakes, lines or physical features:

Stakes: When defined by stakes, the edge of the ground under repair is defined by the line between the outside points of the stakes at ground level, and the stakes are inside the ground under repair.

Lines: When defined by a painted line on the ground, the edge of the ground under repair is the outside edge of the line, and the line itself is in the ground under repair.

Physical Features: When defined by physical features (such as a flower bed or a turf nursery), the Committee should say how the edge of the ground under repair is defined.

When the edge of ground under repair is defined by lines or physical features, stakes may be used to show where the ground under repair is, but they have no other meaning.

Question 3

On the putting green, a player marks her ball. She does not remove the marker before hitting her putt. What is the ruling?

A - The player gets one penalty stroke.
B - The player loses the hole.
C - There is no penalty.

Correct answer A

Explanation: If a player makes a stroke with a ball-marker left in place, she gets one penalty stroke (Rule 14.1a).

Round 9

Question 1

A player plays her second shot, searches for her ball briefly and then goes back and drops another ball under penalty of stroke and distance. Her original ball is then found within three minutes of when she originally starting searching for it, and before she played the dropped ball. What is the ruling?

A - The player may choose whether to continue with the original ball or the dropped ball.
B - The player must continue with the dropped ball.
C - The player must continue with the original ball.

Question 2

In a stroke-play competition, the Committee issues the scorecards containing a player's handicap in addition to his name and the date. The Committee mistakenly records the player's handicap as seven instead of six and this affects the number of strokes received. The error remains unnoticed until after the card is returned, but before the competition has closed. What is the ruling?

A - As it was a mistake of the Committee, the player should not be disqualified, however, the player's handicap should be considered to be 7 for the basis of the competition.
B - The player's correct handicap should be applied to his score.
C - The player is disqualified.

Question 3

In match play, a player mistakenly believing he has won a hole, picks up his ball-marker. What is the ruling?

A - There is no penalty and the player must replace the ball or ball-marker.
B - The player gets one penalty stroke and must replace his ball or ball-marker.
C - The player loses the hole.
