9 hole scores - WHS
« on: Dec 11, 2020, 08:31:48 »
I submitted a 9 hole score on Weds and it has appeared in the system with 9 x NR for the back 9

This means I shot 43 (+7) for the front and 63!! for the back for an AGS of 106

I believed there was an approach for 9 hole scores - something like net par +1 for the missing 9

Am I wrong - no point submitting 9 hole scores if they are treated as above

a 9 hole score should be scaled up to an 18 hole score for handicapping purposes by adding net pars for the remaining holes plus one additional stroke.

Did you actually state that you would be submitting a 9 hole score before you played? Whoever processed your card might have thought that you were submitting an 18 hole score, in which case, because you only played 9 holes, all of the remaining holes would have been treated as nett double bogeys. For such scaling up, the "2nd" nine should effectively be the same holes as the first nine....it is not correct to scale up using the "other" nine holes of an 18 hole course.

If you recorded your course handicap on your card as your 18 hole handicap then this may have been a source of confusion.

If they come back and say they are right and you are wrong, refer them to rule 5.1b on page 47 of the WHS manual and the nice diagram on page 48!!!

So they have amended it in IG and it uploaded to WHS overnight (now down to 15.1  :))

Does anyone know how the calc the HI for 9 holes

Course rating front 9 white tees is 37.5 (back is 35.5)
Slope front = 138 back 132
I shot 43 gross on the front
No PCC

The calc WHS came up with is 13.1 - but I cant get to it

Its bloody complicated...I've been trying for an hour and I've got the books in front of me!!!!

Basically your 9 hole score will be scaled up to an 18 hole score by adding nett double bogeys, plus one shot to the actual score you shot for 9 holes....BUT...you need to calculate an 18 hole Course Handicap based on the difficulty of the 9 holes that you actually played and then allocate the additional shots based on the SI's of the holes you played.

Can you tell me the Stroke Indexes of the holes on the front nine please?

Right...I've sussed it!!!!

Firstly you need to calculate a Course Handicap for 18 holes. But this is based on the 9 holes that you actually played because the front nine is a different difficulty to the back nine...

Course Handicap = Index*(slope rating of the 9 holes played/113) + (2*the course rating of the 9 holes played - 2*the par of the 9 holes played)

CH = 15.4*(138/113) + (2*37.5 - 2*36)

CH = 15.4*1.22124 + 3

CH = 21.8 which rounds to 22

So basically if you were going to play the front nine twice you would have a course handicap of 22.

Secondly, you now need to upscale your 9 hole score to an 18 hole score...

Basically you assume that the additional 9 holes are all NETT Pars and then add 1 extra stroke. But to determine Nett Par you apply the previously calculated 22 handicap to the 9 holes that you have already played. So in your case...

Hole:         1          2        3          4          5        6          7          8          9
SI:            11         7        5         15        17       1          13        3          9
Par:           4          4        3          5          4        4          4          4          4
Nett Par:    5          5        4          6          5        6          5          6          5      Total = 47 + 1 extra = 48

Adding this "mythical" 48 to your actual recorded 9 hole score of 43 gives you a total upscaled 18 hole gross score of 91.

Finally we need to calculate the score differential which will appear in your record...

DIFF = (113/9 hole slope) * (adjusted gross - 2*Course Rating of the 9 holes played)

DIFF = (113/138)*(91-2*37.5)

DIFF = 0.818841 * 16

DIFF = 13.1

Got it?

All I can say is that I'm happy that our club is not practically laid out to allow players to play and return 9 hole scores!!!!!!

So perfectly straight forward then  :picard: :picard:

Thanks for that - because our courses support 9 hole rounds easily and I work with the US I play a lot of early 9's throughout the year (before conference calls kick in) it is good to know how to work it out

Cheers Nick - hope that didnt take too long!

The bit I initially missed was the initial calculation of the 18 hole CH based on the 9 holes played....unfortunately the book is written arse about face and mentions the need to do this at the bottom of the page where it talks about upscaling scores instead of being process step number 1!!!!
